Fueled by a booming oil economy and the return of civilian rule after years of military regimes, Nigeria experienced a cultural and musical explosion. This period saw a wave of young artists and bands flooding the airwaves and dancefloors of Lagos and beyond, creating a bold and polished brand of pop music that emerged from the remnants of 1970s disco and funk. Much like their American counterparts, this new generation embraced themes of wealth, fashion, and flirtation, leaving behind the psychedelic excesses of the previous decade. Intent on mimicking Western sounds and distancing themselves from the afro-beat, afro-rock, and afrocentric movements of the '70s, these performers chased a modern image of fame rooted in the flashy, fast-paced aesthetic of 1980s America and Europe. Bell-bottoms and Cuban heels gave way to sharp suits, rolled-up sleeves, bow ties, jumpsuits, leather jackets, slick hairstyles, and a clear stylistic nod to Michael Jackson.
